I wrote this tune whilst on Islay this weekend for the fantastic festival that is The Islay Sessions. I was out for the whole weekend playing in a wee duo with Gráinne Brady. We played at a ceilidh on the Friday night, ran workshops on the Saturday morning, played at the grand concert on the Saturday night alongside 4 other duos/trios and played tunes on the Sunday. I got a wee chance to play the piano in the Port Charlotte Hotel lounge so I sat down and wrote this tune.
I composed the tune in E minor and then I thought maybe it would sound nice in F#minor. The A part did sound lovely but there was something about the B part that didn’t sound as nice as when it was in the original key. The original chords for the first bit of the B part are: C, G, C, D. When I transposed it to F#minor those chords where then: D, A, D, E. There was just something about them that didn’t sound anywhere near as satisfying as when it was in the other key so I kept it in the original key as I think it sounds much nicer.
So here it is, week 29 for #tuneoftheweek ‘Islay’.
